🗣️ AI-Assisted Speech Practice for Stroke Recovery
Real experiences and practical insights from stroke survivors using AI chatbots for speech rehabilitation
💡 Real User Discovery
We're working with a stroke survivor who is using our AI companion to practice speaking again. Through her experience, we've learned valuable lessons about what works—and what doesn't—in AI-assisted speech therapy.
🎯 Key Learning: Timing is Everything
The Challenge We Discovered
Our user found that the chatbot spoke too quickly and for too long, often interrupting her while she was still formulating her response. Stroke survivors often need more processing time and may speak more slowly as they work to rebuild their communication skills.
This taught us: AI tools for stroke recovery need special timing considerations that regular chatbots don't account for.
Adjustments We're Making
- Shorter AI responses (1-2 sentences maximum)
- Longer wait times before the AI speaks
- Clear pause indicators so users know when it's safe to speak
- Option to adjust response timing based on individual needs
- Visual cues in addition to audio responses
📚 Progressive Reading Exercises
Level 1: Single Words
Start with simple, familiar words. Practice saying them aloud clearly:
Hello • Thank you • Please • Water • Help • Yes • No
Level 2: Short Phrases
Practice common phrases you use daily:
- • "I am fine"
- • "How are you?"
- • "I need help"
- • "Good morning"
- • "See you later"
Level 3: Complete Sentences
Practice expressing complete thoughts:
- • "I would like some water, please."
- • "Today is a beautiful day."
- • "I am working on my speech."
- • "Thank you for your patience."
- • "I feel better every day."
